There are in total 44 rivers in Kerala .Out of it 41 flows towards the West. These rivers all originate in the Western Ghats range and flow westward into the Kerala Backwaters or into the Arabian Sea. There are three rivers, which originate in Kerala and flow eastwards, into Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The longest river in Kerala is the Periyar, flowing from the high altitude ranges of the Idukki mountains. Bharatapuzha is the second largest river in Kerala. The river starts in the Anamalai of Tamilnadu. It flows through the district of Coimbatore, Palghat, Malapuram, Thishivaperur and reaches the Arabian Sea at Ponani. The third largest river is Pamba and it starts in the Anamalai of Tamilnadu. It flows through the district of Coimbatore, Palghat, Malapuram, Thishivaperur and reaches the Arabian Sea at Ponani.
