Jewish Synagogue

The Jewish Synagogue in Kochi was built in 1568 AD. The Jewish Monument is the oldest existing synagogue among the common wealth countries of the world. The synagogue, which is a Jewish place of worship, has scrolls of Old Testament and old copper plates that have records of grants and privileges given to the rulers of Kochi. The Jewish synagogues of Kerala have a great sense of religious tolerance in them. Unfortunately, the synagogue was partially destroyed during the wars of 1662 AD, but was later rebuilt by the Dutch. There is the 18th century clock tower, standing within the premises and the exquisite hand painted blue Chinese tiles, that provide an impressive sight. Interestingly, none of the two hundred year old tile resembles one another. This famous synagogue in Kerala India, also houses many finely wrought gold and silver crowns gifted by the various patrons of the state. The synagogue is covered with beautifully painted Chinese tiles and the amazing fact is that no two tiles resemble each other. The interiors are beautifully decorated with Belgian chandeliers and grand lighting. The synagogue has a collection of the souvenirs that were presented to the kings of Kochi as a token of love and affection. The synagogue is an important symbol of the religious and cultural heritage of the Jews.
